The RAW+JPEG is necessary in some cases - when you want to have a JPEGs available for quick view. Most raw converters can convert to jpg - for free. The D7000, as well as most Nikon DSLR cameras, will shoot BOTH raw and JPG TOGETHER - for free. The RAW + JPG together file mode is unnecessary since every NEF file contains a full sized JPG image anyway and it is simple enough to extract it. So, no, I can't agree that there is any inconvenience to post-hoc NEF to JPG conversion and I expect there are now many great free utilities available to do the job. Apart from bulk extraction of the embedded JPG it would do things like create a spreadsheet of all the EXIF data for all the images in a directory. The best thing about it (for me) was that it was command line driven and therefore could be launched from inside other programs (I'm a software developer). I wrote some of the documentation for it. Jon Oman, who used to post in this forum a few years ago, made a wonderful program called d70reader available free of charge. Capture NX2 does batch conversion easily, Paintshop Pro fairly easily. On the contrary Nik, bulk conversion of NEF to JPG (and maybe some other formats) is a doddle.
